Being a diverse and exciting destination for a working holiday, you can expect Australia to have plenty of work opportunities for Registered Nurses or Enrolled Nurses who want to earn money during their holiday. Finding nursing jobs in Melbourne, for instance, will not be difficult, what with many nursing specialities available. So get a working holiday visa and take a chance at nursing in Melbourne or other areas in Australia.
With a mix of large teaching hospitals, private acute hospitals, and smaller aged care units and public facilities, it’s safe to say that there isn’t a shortage of nursing jobs in Australia. But what is really exciting and rewarding about being a nurse in Australia is the excellent working conditions.
If you are aged 18 to 30 years old, your best option is to get a Working Holiday 417 Visa that is available for passport holders from countries that Australia has a reciprocal agreement with. The 417 Visa will give you an opportunity to travel around the country as well as work in between adventures.
How you will be paid will depend on the number of years of your nursing experience. The Federal Modern Award has a list of casual rates relevant to your years of tenure. After your nursing experience has been verified, you will know how much supplementary income you can expect.
The ANMAC is responsible for assessing overseas nurses who wish to live and work in Australia. You can obtain the ANMAC skills assessment form, which is mainly for migration purposes, from the organisation’s website. You must complete the form and pay the application fees for the application process to start.
This usually takes 6 to 8 weeks but could take longer in some cases. Upon receipt of your application, ANMC will send a confirmation, along with a file reference number that you can use in all correspondence with the national nursing body.
Registration of all nurses and midwives is handled by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, which is supported by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). (Read how to become APHRA Registered)
So, to obtain your nursing registration, you must complete a form with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. This can be done overseas through the board’s website www.nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au. Just look for the Application general registration (overseas applicants) – AGOS-40 form. A current Australian Authority to Practice as an Enrolled or Registered Nurse is required for registration.
